This site is a companion to White Water Safety & Rescue (second edition) by Franco Ferrero. This new edition has been revised to include various updates to good practice, including reorganization of the Rescues section to fit more closely with the TRTTG ‘low to high risk’ model; revision of the advice for rafters (by Geraint Rowlands); and adoption of the one-handed river signals as used by Paul O’Sullivan in his chapter in the BCU Canoe & Kayak Handbook.

These updates reflect part of the ongoing development of swiftwater rescue practices for canoeists, kayakers and rafters. This site is intended to throw open the opportunity to the authors of White Water Safety & Rescue and other contributors to extend the scope of the book, and to publish the latest news in best practice. Providing a free resource for all white water practicioners and those who venture onto the water.

Whistling with fingers should perhaps be on the primary school curriculum (not a class I would want to lead). It’s not a replacement for carrying a storm whistle, but well practiced, can be extremely useful. For a concise written instruction see Nat Wilson on How to Whistle Loudly.
